Q&A

Will I get paid for the services rendered to the family?

No. While some families might agree to some pocket money in rare cases, this relationship should be considered a mutual experience. You will be hosted and fed by the family. You will generally participate in the activities the family takes part in. But this is not a nanny job. It is not a paid position. The relationship you will form with the parents and their children and the feeling of belonging and helping will be your biggest reward.

What makes me a good candidate for the program?

You need to be healthy and energetic enough to keep up with the needs of a family with young children. Since your primary occupation will be to help take care of the children, we recommend some prior experience with children (whether professionally or personally). Should you have had one child of your own and no further experience with children, you might want to carefully consider the challenges inherent to joining a family with 5 children. A good candidate for the Granny program will have that inner desire to belong and feel helpful. It is easier to become a Granny if you are single and able to be away from your home for 2 to 3 months or more. Very importantly, make sure that you have the time to fully dedicate yourself to the task.

Can I join a family in a foreign country?

Yes. As long as you abide by all immigration laws. Make sure to fully understand the laws of the country you would like to stay in. Length of stay, visas, etc. will vary and you and your Family should be fully aware of all laws governing such a stay. Since no money should be received during your stay, you should be able to enter most countries as a regular tourist. It is ultimately your responsibility, as Granny, to abide by the receiving country’s laws.

What should I expect during my stay?

Expect to be a part of the family and an important part of the kids’ lives (potentially their favorite person in the house!). While you are living with them, the family will go on with their normal schedules and routines. Do not expect them to do extra sightseeing because you are there. You will find that many families are looking for a Granny during a time that might be especially busy and/or difficult for them (i.e., recent move, new addition to the family, special assignment at work, etc.). Expect to feel that your work is appreciated beyond their expectations and take pride in their gratitude! But this is an excellent question to ask as you get to know the family prior to your stay with them.

How do I search for Families?

Click the ‘Find Granny/Family’ link in the top menu. If you know the name or screen name of the Member you are searching for, enter it in the Search field. You can filter for characteristics important to you (i.e., non-smoker) to only see Members best matching your requirements. You can also chose to only view Members with a profile picture by checking the “Only users with avatar” box. To see someone’s profile, click on their name, then click the “About” link underneath their picture to access their information. You can send a private message to that person. You can friend the person and even chat with someone who is online at the same time as you are!

I have paid for my membership, now what?

Once you have paid for your membership, start completing your profile. Click on the link on the right-handside showing “Your profile is 0% complete.” Answer all questions with a red star and save. Uploading a profile picture will increase your chances of being contacted. Once your profile completed, either click the “Members” link above your profile picture or the “Find Granny/Family” like in the top menu to start seeing other Members’ profiles.

Why do I need to pay to create a profile?

Many websites will let anyone create profiles for free, inflating their profile base and making it look like they have more Members to attract new subscribers. We know the feeling of scrolling through dozens of profiles, messaging your favorite ones, and receiving very little feedback. By only showing profiles of paying Members, we limit the amount of Members you need to scroll through and message before finding a family currently looking for a Granny. At OurGranny.com, we understands that your time is as valuable as ours. We provide you with relevant and current profiles and increase your chances at finding and being found quickly.

Why should I participate in the program?

Hosting a Granny is enriching. Grannies come with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Offer them your trust and watch your life become easier, simpler. They will give you the gift of time by helping with the little things, enabling you to spend more time as a family. Imagine coming home to play with the kids instead of spending your first 30 minutes unloading the dryer and cleaning up the breakfast table you didn’t get to before leaving in the morning. Your Granny creates magic and gives you that edge you need to bring quality back to your family life!

What are some reasonable expectations of our Granny?

The Granny’s primary activity will be to care for your children. You can expect her to help with getting the children ready for school, driving them to and from school / activities, feeding them snacks after school, bathing them and getting them ready for bed. They will be great playmates and usually enjoy taking the kids for walks, doing arts and crafts, singing songs, baking, etc. While the kids are at school, most Grannies have the inner need to stay busy and feel useful. It is not unusual for a Granny to help with vacuuming, dusting, doing the dishes, helping with gardening, doing laundry, etc. While this is usually the case, remember to share your expectations and understand hers before committing to the relationship.

What should I provide to the Granny to make her stay successful and pleasant?

At a bare minimum, the Granny should have a private room in your home and be fed. Most families pay for the Granny’s transportation to their home as well. Based on her duties, you might want to consider providing a cell phone, family computer, car and gas, toiletries, etc. You will find that each Granny has slightly different expectations. Try to clarify as much as you can in the conversations you have prior to the stay. Consider drafting a contract with your Granny. Everything else should be easily addressed while the Granny is staying with you. Remember the amount of time she is giving to your family and the impact her help has on your family’s life!

May I host a foreign Granny?

Hosting a foreign Granny is a great idea, especially if your family has ties with a specific country or language. Make sure to be fully informed of all immigration laws. Since the Granny is not paid, she should be able to enter the country as a regular tourist in most places. Visas, lengths of stays, and other regulations are country-specific and should be considered prior to booking the Granny’s trip. While it is the Granny’s responsibility to understand the laws of the visiting country, she will heavily rely on you – the resident – to help her navigate the requirements for her stay.
